Richard Swirnow Awarded Easter Seals National Philanthropist of the Year
Washington, D.C., Monday, October 19, 2009 -- Easter Seals honored Richard Swirnow, founder and chairman of Harborview Properties Development Company, as its 2009 Philanthropist of the Year during the organization’s national convention in Washington, D.C. For more than a decade, Easter Seals National Board of Directors has annually acknowledged the role of volunteerism in charitable giving by recognizing a philanthropist who has made a significant impact on Easter Seals. This year, Swirnow will be recognized for his longtime commitment to giving back to the community.
“Richard is a visionary and supports Easter Seals’ vision for innovation and changing the way people with disabilities are served in the 21st century,” said Lisa Reeves, CEO and President of Easter Seals Greater Washington-Baltimore Region.
Swirnow was a driving force behind the renewal of the city of Baltimore, successfully blending the established charm of the region with forward thinking revitalization. Swirnow augmented his quest to revive downtown Baltimore by becoming the long-time host of the annual Easter Seals Cruise for Kids. Swirnow provides his marina, staff and countless hours marshalling financial support. Swirnow invited thousands of families of children and adults with disabilities to join volunteer boaters and others to sail the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. For the families, the cruise is a day of therapeutic fun.
“Helping people help themselves is a hallmark of Easter Seals commitment and Richard’s belief,” said Reeves. Swirnow also created and financially supported a Center for Excellence in Training within Easter Seals’ Inter-Generational Center, where organizations and individuals broaden their knowledge and spread their teachings.
